Washington meeting marks crucial turning point for South Caucasus's future

The meeting held on August 8 in Washington between Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with the mediation of US President Donald Trump holds historic significance, Azerbaijani MP Sabina Salmanova told Report.

According to her, the meeting represents a crucial turning point for the South Caucasus's future:

“The Joint Declaration adopted following the meeting will go down in history as the most serious step toward establishing real peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia after years of conflict. President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, strategic vision, and political foresight in this process are undeniable. Thanks to our head of state's principled and balanced policy, Azerbaijan restored historical justice during the Patriotic War and fully ensured its territorial integrity. Yet, President Ilham Aliyev did not stop at this victory—he has continued to take equally resolute and responsible steps in the diplomatic arena to achieve long-term and sustainable peace in the region.”

Salmanova emphasized that President Ilham Aliyev has consistently backed his promises with action:

“What was once said about the Zangazur Corridor is no longer just on paper—it has become a political and diplomatic reality. In particular, the international transport initiative known as the ‘Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity’ (TRIPP), which is planned to pass through Armenian territory, opens up economic prospects for all countries in the region.”

The MP also highlighted the role and political will of US President Donald Trump in the realization of the Washington meeting and the Joint Declaration:

“The United States’ support for the peace process reflects the international community’s commitment to the region’s stability and development.”
