The successful hosting of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku is a positive result of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's effective domestic and foreign policy, said Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, during today's parliamentary plenary session, Report informs.
Gafarova noted that the Head of State, in his opening speech at the forum, spoke about modern urban development projects implemented in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan: "President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan's urban planning traditions have deep historical roots. Over centuries, a rich urban culture has developed here, and unique architectural monuments have been created. Today, while preserving its historical heritage, Azerbaijan also applies modern standards of sustainable development and advanced approaches in urban planning."
She highlighted the exceptional importance of reconstruction and building works in Azerbaijan's liberated territories: "In Karabakh and East Zangazur, not only new settlements are being built, but also modern living environments are being created. It is noteworthy that 2026 has been declared the Year of Urban Planning and Architecture in our country. Hosting WUF13 during such a period shows that urban planning, architecture, and sustainable development are priorities not only in Azerbaijan's domestic agenda but also in its international activities."
The speaker added that members of the Milli Majlis actively participated in WUF13 panel sessions and contributed to discussions: "The parliamentary dimension of sustainable development is gaining increasing importance. Legislative bodies play a crucial role in creating the legal foundations for modern urban planning, ecological safety, efficient land management, and improving citizens' quality of life."
