Official: 68 monuments completely destroyed in Azerbaijan's liberated territories

A total of 68 monuments in Azerbaijan's liberated territories were completely destroyed, Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture, said.

According to Report, she made the remarks at the event "Protecting Cultural Heritage and Biodiversity in Turkic Civilization: From Shared Traditions to Joint Action," held as part of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

Hajiyeva said nine state-registered mausoleums, three cemeteries and seven mosques in the liberated territories were completely destroyed, while 25 mosques, 14 mausoleums and two crypts sustained varying degrees of damage.

"These figures cover only monuments included in Azerbaijan's official list of monuments. However, the number of monuments in Karabakh and East Zangazur is many times higher," she said.

Hajiyeva noted that the latest list of monuments was adopted in 2001, during the occupation.

"Now that we are able to carry out monitoring ourselves, we are naturally discovering more sites of interest in these territories," she added.
