COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago, a Brazilian diplomat, has stated that guests of the upcoming conference will be shown the same hospitality in Brazil that participants experienced in Azerbaijan at COP29, Report informs.
He noted that Brazil maintains regular contact with Azerbaijan, which hosted COP29 last year: "This week, we held numerous climate meetings in New York and met with COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev. We are working very closely to strengthen the results achieved in Baku and prepare well for the conference in Brazil."
According to Lago, the Azerbaijani side managed to resolve one of the most complex and technical issues in the history of climate diplomacy: "Work on the Paris Agreement rule was finalized at COP29 in Baku. There had been unresolved issues for many years, and Azerbaijan managed to resolve them. The COP29 Presidency achieved consensus on long-standing issues.
The most important achievements were the closure of Article 6, which had been awaited for years, and the key decision on the COP29 climate budget-increasing funding for developing countries and creating a new mechanism. The Azerbaijani Presidency announced the completion of ten years of negotiations on high-quality carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This was one of the most complex and technical issues, and it was resolved. We will benefit from Baku's experience.
And most importantly, we were very warmly received in Baku. We will welcome our guests in the same way. However, in November, Belem, where COP30 will be held, is noticeably hotter than Baku, so conditions will be completely different."
