Orkhan Mammadov: Sustainable cities cannot be created through government investment alone

Building sustainable and resilient cities in today's environment cannot rely solely on government investment and policy instruments, Orkhan Mammadov, chairman of the Board of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (KOBIA), said at the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

"Entrepreneurs, startups, technology developers, architects, urban innovators, and infrastructure builders are all making a crucial contribution to shaping smarter, more environmentally responsible, and inclusive cities for generations to come. Azerbaijan is already achieving significant results along this path. Major urban transformation projects, the implementation of smart city and smart village concepts, the expansion of green spaces, the renewal of urban infrastructure, and the restoration of reclaimed land based on sustainable development principles-all of this reflects the country's commitment to innovative and forward-looking urban planning," emphasized the head of KOBIA.

Mammadov believes that WUF13 offers significant opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to engage with international stakeholders, establish new business partnerships, learn about best practices, and present innovative products, services, and solutions that promote sustainable urban development.

"In this regard, today's discussion serves as an important platform for highlighting the role of SMEs as key players in building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities, as well as for deepening collaboration between government agencies, international organizations, and the private sector. I am confident that today's discussions will lead to a fruitful exchange of ideas and facilitate closer cooperation in advancing sustainable urban development both in Azerbaijan and abroad," said the head of KOBIA.
