Azerbaijan becomes full member of International Bureau of Weights and Measures

Azerbaijan has officially obtained member state status at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), Report informs, citing the State Service for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control under the President of Azerbaijan.

The country has thus transitioned from associate status, which it had held since 2015, to full member state status.

The process culminated after President Ilham Aliyev approved the law on Azerbaijan's accession to the Metre Convention on July 7, 2026. Accession to the convention was one of the main requirements for obtaining BIPM member state status.

The new status expands the international activities of the Azerbaijan Metrology Institute (AzMI), which operates under the State Service.

It will allow Azerbaijan to strengthen international recognition of its metrology system, participate directly in shaping international metrology decisions, integrate its national metrology infrastructure more closely into the BIPM system, access calibration services free of charge, and further develop its national measurement standards and calibration capabilities based on advanced expertise and practices.

AzMI has so far registered 35 calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) in the BIPM's Key Comparison Database (KCDB) and participated in 11 international comparisons.

As a member of the Euro-Asian Cooperation of National Metrological Institutions (COOMET), AzMI has also been represented under the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA), which provides for the mutual recognition of national measurement standards and calibration and measurement certificates issued by national metrology institutes.

The Metre Convention was signed in Paris on May 20, 1875, and forms the foundation of the modern international metrology system.

The BIPM, established under the convention, works to ensure worldwide uniformity of measurements, maintain international measurement standards and coordinate cooperation among national metrology institutes.
