By 2030, the area of cotton fields equipped with modern irrigation systems in Azerbaijan will increase from the current 6,600 hectares to 42,000 hectares, Azerbaijan's Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov said at a meeting held within the framework of the State Program for the Development of Agricultural Production and Processing, Fisheries, and Aquaculture for 2026–2030.
Report quotes the minister as saying government support for farmers includes subsidies covering up to 40% of the cost of modern irrigation equipment, concessional loans with 40–50% of interest expenses subsidized, and additional mechanisms to offset part of farmers' operating costs.
Mammadov noted that the development of cotton farming is being hindered by inefficient land use and shortcomings in agricultural practices.
"Small and fragmented cultivation areas prevent the efficient use of modern agricultural machinery, significantly complicating mechanized harvesting and increasing production costs," the minister explained.
He added that another challenge is the improper implementation of defoliation measures.
"Incorrect timing and dosage of chemicals negatively affect fiber quality and reduce overall yields. In addition, prolonged cotton cultivation on the same plot depletes soil fertility, contributes to the spread of diseases and pests, and ultimately leads to lower productivity," he said.
