Azerbaijan plans to expand digital monitoring and accounting of water use in the agricultural sector, Zakir Guliyev, Chairman of the Regional Water Melioration Service of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ASWRA), said, according to Report's correspondent in Saatli.
Speaking at a regional meeting on the Mil-Mughan Economic Zone within the framework of the State Program for the Development of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Production and Processing in Azerbaijan for 2026–2030, Guliyev emphasized that improving water-use efficiency and introducing modern irrigation technologies remain key priorities.
The chairman noted that in the Mil-Mughan region, irrigation water serves 77,500 producers, with 6,704 km of irrigation networks, 213 pumping stations, more than 100 sub-artesian wells, and about 19,500 hydraulic structures in operation.
Last year, 2.026 billion cubic meters of water were used for irrigation, of which 1.427 billion cubic meters were supplied to farms, he added.
Guliyev further stated that projects have been implemented to reconstruct canals and pumping stations, including the Gizilarkh and Boztapa canals, as well as water supply facilities in the Sabirabad district, improving irrigation for tens of thousands of hectares of farmland.
